Honoring the Past, Building the Future

Before I went to sleep, I felt it was important to pause and reflect before I went to sleep last night.

I couldn’t let the day end without first celebrating Black History Month and Shaw University. Shaw U represents more than just a campus. It represents generations of leaders, change-makers, and dreamers who paved the way so that students like me can walk confidently into the future.

We’re reminded that our stories, voices, and journeys matter during Black History Month. The sacrifices and triumphs of those who came before us continue to shape who we are and who we are becoming. My dad and I both created caricature videos that reflect our journeys, personalities, and our passion for learning, leadership, and service. While they were creative and lighthearted, they also reminded us how important it is to embrace who you are and to proudly share your story.

Creating those videos together was a reminder of the legacy we’re building, the values we share, and the importance of using our voices to inspire others.

This weekend, I’ll have the privilege of attending the John Lewis Young Leaders Good Trouble Summit. This experience is a chance to learn, grow, and be inspired by leaders who believe in creating positive change. It’s a reminder that “good trouble” is still necessary, and that young people have a role to play in shaping our communities and our country.

I’m thankful to Shaw University for opening doors and believing in my potential. Their support continues to motivate me to work harder, dream bigger, and lead with purpose.

As I reflect during this season, I’m reminded that honoring the past is about building confidence, character, communities, and futures.
