A Story of American History

Updated: Mar 18, 2022

Jonathan Burgess is the co-founder of Burgess Brothers Food. He and his twin brother, Matthew created the “ChurWaffle,” and sell cornbread mix based on their mother’s original recipe. Jonathan holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Phoenix. He is the author of Gold Rush: Burgess Descendants. Johnathan co-authored this book with Michelle Knight and Kim Jones. It recounts the story of the Burgess family wherein a former slave purchased his freedom, owned land, etc. Their story has been featured in the LA Times, ABC 10 Sacramento, CBS Sacramento, and National Geographic Channel as it’s not only a story about black history, but American History as well. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy once I heard about it and I wasn’t disappointed in the least. I believe that children are the principle audience for Gold Rush has universal appeal to children and adults alike. I say that because it strikes a perfect tone between its illustrations, characterizations, and language. I loved how each segment of the story concluded with questions. That in and of itself, helps the reader affirm what you they’ve read in the prior pages. Proceeding in such a manner helps to ensure retention of information. Moving along, the illustrations and formatting were done extremely well. To be specific, the illustration of Johnathan Burgess was absolutely spot on albeit I presumed that he was a police officer as opposed to a fire fighter when I first opened the book. What I most loved about Gold RushI is how the authors traced their family history back three generations and proved how it’s indeed American History. I also loved how Grandpa Rufus helped them land the plane in that regard by keeping important records and passing them down throughout the generations. That in and of itself shows that he was a man outside of time as he had foresight that few possess. It all made for a fantastic read and a worthwhile purchase. 5 ⭐️’s
