I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Kim C. Lee at a children's book pop up shop on April 9, 2022. The pop-up shop was facilitated by Unique Busy Kids in my hometown of Greensboro, NC. The event was in celebration of Week of the Young Child. I decided to purchase a copy of Grand Joy after hearing a great deal about it on Instagram, Facebook, and Clubhouse. In doing so, I asked Kim to make it out to and autograph it for me. She happily obliged and said within, "To Dedrick, Find your greatest joy" as she initialed it with her name. I wasn't exactly certain what she meant by that that is until I opened up the book and began to read it yesterday afternoon.
I was transported back to a time when life was much simpler [as a child]. Memories of various trips with my mom, aunts, uncles, and cousins replayed in my head as I smiled. But not only that memories of just sitting around doing any and everything with my Granny whether it was cooking a meal, going shopping, hanging Christmas Decorations, or just talking to her flashed through my mental rolodex as I turned the pages. I sprung forward back to the present in realizing that I had found my greatest joy. It's quite simply family. I just needed this wonderfully illustrated book and a personal message to remind to take a moment to pause, reflect, be present, and appreciate those special moments. Thank you Kim for the ever present reminder to appreciate the moments in life with those that I love. And thank you Unique Busy Kids for helping to facilitate everything.
