Sherricka Carpenter-Stanley is a woman of many hats. She’s a wife, mother, publisher, author, small business owner, and visionary. Sherricka published a children's book titled Through Our Eyes in late 2021. This book pays tribute to everyone who witnessed Kamala Harris being sworn in as the Vice President of the United States. Through Our Eyes is dedicated to every young Black and Brown child whose name has ever been mispronounced or butchered, including Sherricka and myself.
Reflecting on last night's conclusion of the Democratic National Convention, when Amara and Leela Ajagu, with the help of Kerry Washington, taught the world how to pronounce their aunt's name, I remembered when I first purchased Through Our Eyes in March 2022. I went and grabbed it from the bookshelf and simply said, “Thank you, Sherricka.”
Through Our Eyes is more than just a celebration of Kamala Harris's vice-presidential appointment, you see it foreshadowed her future as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. As a registered Independent I’m not affiliated with either political party. Notwithstanding I feel hopeful for a brighter future for us all, and I believe Shirley Chisholm is smiling down with joy. Congratulations on a job well done, Sherricka. I'm so proud to not only call you a fellow author but a friend as well.
