Finding my Ministry in Service

I can’t exactly explain why, but I’ve been holding onto a secret that only my mom, wife, daughter, and the person who nominated me knew. But today, I’m excited to share that I’ve been selected as the recipient of North Carolina’s Key Volunteer Award for Individuals. And not only that, I was also a nominee for the Governor’s Medallion, the highest recognition of volunteer service in the state.
What started as a quiet secret between my wife, my daughter, my mom, and the person who nominated me is now something I get to share with all of you.
Just last week, I told my mom how heavy things had been. The pressure. The responsibility. The emotional toll of constantly pouring into others. People told me to take a break to slow down. But I looked at her with tears in my eyes and said, “This is my big thing. I can’t give it up.”
She just smiled and said,“Baby, don’t give it up. You’ve found your ministry.” That moment stuck with me because it was validation and clarity.
I’ve never done this work for applause. I’ve done it because it’s right. Because it’s necessary. Because it makes me feel good to help out those who truly need it.
But today, I’m humbled to be seen and honored. And I’m grateful to have shared it with my wife, daughter, and my Families Moving Forward (FMF) family.
This award is a moment I’ll never forget but isn’t the finish line. It’s fuel so I’ll keep showing up. I’ll keep building. I’ll keep pouring myself out.
But now, I want to hear from you.
What’s your “big thing,” the one thing you keep showing up for no matter how tired you are?
